Baranasuriya Boys Home for Special Needs

One of our most impactful initiatives has been the Baranasuriya Boys Home for Special Needs. Since taking on this project in 2020, the home has become the most sought-after placement for special needs boys in the region. Our ongoing support includes:

  • Monthly food and cooking fuel
  • New sports and art equipment
  • Expanding the school to accommodate more children

The classroom we built has taught many higher-functioning children how to thrive in a classroom setting, with several now mainstreamed into the local school. Our efforts have not only improved the quality of life for these boys but have also given them opportunities to integrate into society and pursue their education.

Stories of Change

Among the many children whose lives have been touched is a boy who received hearing aids through our program. Once excluded from school, he is now thriving at his proper grade level. Tragically, he lost both parents to Covid, leaving him orphaned but now able to learn and grow thanks to the support of C.O.L.O.R. Most of the boys at the home have parents who, due to financial hardship, cannot support their special needs children. The home provides a safe, nurturing environment where these children can flourish.

Community and Volunteer Engagement

Our project manager, Ruchi, has been with us for 21 years and now runs a volunteer travel company for college students. These volunteers have played a vital role in maintaining and beautifying the Boys Home, painting classrooms and dormitories, and bringing joy and color to the lives of the children.

Meeting Growing Needs: The Next Classroom

As our program grows, so does the need for additional space. The classroom we built quickly filled with new students and now we must build a second classroom to better separate age groups and provide tailored learning environments. This expansion will allow us to mainstream even more children into local schools and continue our mission of empowerment through education.
