September 2006 - Lechang County, Southern China
Teaching supplies and sports equipment was donated for students at the Longzhu
Elementary School.
December 2005 - Weligama,
Sri Lanka
We (C.O.L.O.R. volunteers Scott and
Jennifer) visited the small town of Weligama, near Matara in Sri Lanka. This
area is on the southern coast of Sri Lanka and suffered a direct hit from the
tsunami and many lives were lost. The small town had little rebuild happening
and was finding recovery difficult. A local woman named Dishanti had organized
free English tutoring for the children and was in need of some educational
materials. Having lost her business, home and only brother in the tsunami,
Dishanti was teaching school on what was the foundation of her home. Upon our
arrival we were treated to a wonderful dance performance by the children, and
afterwards Jennifer applied temporary tattoos to very excited children.
After assessing their needs, we returned the following week with over 100 English language children’s books, notebooks, pens, pencils, markers, crayons, erasers, pencil boxes, some new toys, and backpacks for each child. We gave new dresses to the girls and shorts with shirts to the boys. We also purchased a large white board, extra tables and benches, and we replaced the broken classroom stereo so they could have music and sing along with the microphone.
The children were very appreciative and excited about their new clothes and school items. C.O.L.O.R. is very thankful for our donors that make these very personal and much needed donations possible. Thank you!
